Helix were commissioned to look at this 1950’s department store and to see how the existing building could be re-purposed for today’s needs.
Working with the Asset Management team, and utilising only old archive PDF plans. Helix prepared a workable internal reconfiguration for retail, office, hotel and residential.
Externally we proposed a simple yet unobtrusive over clad approach to the primary facades to strengthen the linear geometries. We rationalised the window fenestration’s with cosmetic treatment to the brick secondary facades.
Helix were able to take a failed and aged department store and breathe new life into its footprint.
To re-purpose the building to protect the asset value, recover the yields and give it a new outward face so that this failed building usage, could once again serve the owner, the tenant and the community.
