Detail Design

The site is located in a busy shopping district in London. The existing building was a 1960's office building with colonnades and arches. David Chipperfield Architects refurbished and converted the building for Joseph Menswear store in 1997. The existing structure has been retained and the external envelope clad with 9 structural glazing system. The existing windows behind the office on the second floor were screened with stainless steel mesh fabric to obscure the activity behind.

The client appointed Helix to prepare a feasibility study which would look to enhance the external facade of the current building as well as rationalising the internal layout. Our proposal focused on the rectangular form of the building. Our intention was to replace the existing second floor screen mesh with vertical bronze louvers, with full height antique gold vertical members placed at the existing external glass junctions.

Planning consent gained April 2018. Project completed 2019.
